Biography
Andréas Lang was born in Zweibrücken, Germany. He was a drummer in the punkrock band Nasse Hunde, then started his training as photographer and became assistant to the photographers Dieter Blum, Michael Leis and Werner Janda. From 1991-01 living in Paris where he worked as a freelance fashion photographer and then started his first personal photographic works, also video, experimental and documentary film, journeys to Iraq and Northern India; residency in Australia and first works on nature, places and landscape, which from then on become the central theme. From 1999-2005 photographs on European landscapes and Romanticism. From 2006-2008 the series ECLIPSE on historical landscapes in the Near-East related to early Christianity and the Crusades, journeys to Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Syria and Turkye. 2008 and 2010 new works in Cairo and Damascus. 2011 based on research of historical material and the story of his great-grandfather, he starts the project A PHANTOM GEOGRAPHY on German colonialism in Central Africa , journeys to Cameroon, Chad and Central African Republic. 2017 works on the Brazilian Quarter in Lagos/Nigeria in relation to slavery and colonial history. 2018-2023 long-term project BROKEN MEMORIES on memory and history in Turkey, Tarabya cultural academy stipend and artist residency in Istanbul. From 2019-ongoing, the project RE-VISITING ORIENTALISM, journeys to South-Caucasus, the Arabian Peninsula, North-Africa and Central Asia. 2021 finalisation of the film The Building (Das Haus) about the historical layers of a building that hosts the German Foreign Office in Berlin. 2024 Barbara artist residency in Ayvalik, Turkye and project on the historical population exchange between Turkye and Greece. Since 2025 new project based on the research in a museums 19th century photography archive.
